In a Vampire mood for Halloween

Manga Hunter here and I am here to say, “I want to suck your blood.” OK, not really, but I am in a vampire mood for Halloween, so here are recommendations with vampires. YEAH!

Anime

Vampire Hunter D (Licensed by Sentai Filmworks & Urban Vision)

10,000 years in the future, the world has become a very different place; monsters roam the land freely, and people, although equipped with high tech weapons and cybernetic horses, live a humble life more suited to centuries past. The story focuses on a small hamlet plagued by monster attacks and living under the shadow of rule by Count Magnus Lee, a powerful vampire lord who has ruled the land for thousands of years. When a young girl is bitten by the Count and chosen as his current plaything, she seeks out help of a quiet wandering stranger, D. It so happens that D is one of the world’s best vampire hunters, and he takes it upon himself to cut through Magnus Lee’s many minions, and put an end to the Count’s rule.

(Summary from MyAnimeList)

This is actually an anime movie I watched a long time ago when people still rented movies from video stores. I was interested in the vampire aspect and I was quite excited with the hand that could eat spells. There were some points of the movie that confused me, but it was still enjoyable, especially with the happy ending and the twist in the story of the ancestry of the main character. Just to let you know, when half vampires are involved, it becomes more enjoyable for me.

Karin (Licensed by FUNimation Entertainment)

Vampires—supernatural beings that feed on the life essence of the unsuspecting at night—have been around for centuries. However, high schooler Karin Maaka is unusual, even among her own kind. Unlike her vampire family, ever since she was a child, Karin has suffered from polycythemia: a rare disorder which causes her to periodically produce excessive amounts of blood. And the more blood she produces, the more anemic and lightheaded she gets, ultimately leading to frequent nosebleeds.

Her only solution? Force her excess blood onto random strangers, which surprisingly causes these “victims” to become livelier and happier than before. With her siblings—Anju, her reserved yet affectionate younger sister, and Ren, her womanizing elder brother—helping her abilities remain a secret by altering the affected humans’ memories, no one is the wiser. That is, until Karin’s newly transferred classmate, Kenta Usui, finds her behavior suspicious. And to make matters even more complicated, Karin feels her blood reacting unusually to Kenta’s presence.

(Summary from MyAnimeList)

I found this anime by chance. I found it hilarious how this vampire didn’t suck blood, but inserted blood into the victims changing their personality in a positive way. If the blood wasn’t inserted in time, a nosebleed would occur. Considering how I have nosebleeds, I could relate to her, but my nosebleed doesn’t look like flowers.

Cross Academy is an elite boarding school with two separate, isolated classes: the Day Class and the Night Class. On the surface, Yuuki Cross and Zero Kiryuu are prefects of the academy, and attempt to keep order between the students as classes rotate in the evenings. As the Night Class is full of utterly gorgeous elites, this can sometimes prove to be a bit difficult. It is completely necessary, however, as those “elites” are actually vampires. Yuuki and Zero act as guardians, protecting the secrets of the Night Class and the safety of their ignorant morning counterparts.

As the adopted daughter of the academy’s chairman, Yuuki takes her job with a serious and energetic attitude. It also allows her to interact with her secret crush and savior, the president of the Night students’ dorm, Kaname Kuran. Zero, on the other hand, has a deep-rooted hatred against vampires, and at times, does not hesitate to kill.

Can vampires and humans co-exist, even in the strict setup of the Cross Academy? Only time will tell.

(Summary from MyAnimeList)

I like the idea of vampires in a school, but I admit that I read the manga first before taking a peek at the anime. The fight scenes are quite exciting and the romance…makes my heart race.

Diabolik Lovers (Licensed by Sentai Filmworks)

At the behest of her father, Yui Komori goes to live in a secluded mansion, home to the six Sakamaki brothers—Shuu, Reiji, Ayato, Kanato, Laito, and Subaru—a family of vampires. Though at first the siblings are confused as to why the girl has arrived, they soon realize that she is to be their new “sacrificial bride,” not to mention their other, more carnal intentions for her. After meeting the brothers, Yui quickly begins to question why her father would have sent her here and why she feels a strange, new pain in her chest. With each brother more sadistic than the last, Yui’s life as a captive takes a harrowing turn in her new home. As her days turn into endless nights, and each brother vows to make her his own, Yui falls deeper and deeper into madness and ecstasy.

(Summary from MyAnimeList)

This anime is based on an otome game. The episodes are short, but quite hot at some points, especially when the guys hit on the main character in obvious ways. Just ignore the sexual stuff at times, but the twist in the story was quite interesting.

Cross Academy is attended by two groups of students: the Day Class and the Night Class. At twilight, when the students of the Day Class return to their dorm, they cross paths with the Night Class on their way to school. Yuki Cross and Zero Kiryu are the Guardians of the school, protecting the Day Class from the Academy’s dark secret: the Night Class is full of vampires!

(summary from Baka-Updates)

As mentioned before, I read this before watching the anime.

Eru Yamada can’t seem to get away from the supernatural. She’s being stalked by a vampire. Her teacher is a werewolf, who also happens to think she belongs to him! As if that wasn’t enough, yet another boy with supernatural powers shows up, trying to get her to fall for him, and she winds up with a rival in love who has dangerous powers as well!

(summary from Baka-Updates)

Man, this one is an oldie for me. I read this a long time ago and I have to admit that it made me laugh at some points and blush. I don’t really like the main character, but I read it because I love the werewolf teacher, who is goofy and his wolf form is so adorable. SO CUTE! Of course the main love interest is a vampire. The reason why this is in the list.

Chu Chu Chu by: NAKASHIMA Tsubaki

Kojima Mitsu (a.k.a. Honey) is in middle school (She’s 12 years old) but she’s so small that she looks like she’s in elementary school! One day while she is is changing into a maid uniform for a school event (with not much success…the uniform is too big for her), she find a little bat blocked by the window and helps it. Suddenly an awesome guy appears in front of her! He is a vampire and as thanks for saving his “toy,” he helps turn her into an adult (with a kiss)…

(summary from: Shoujo Manga Maniac)

I read this in my last year of high school. It was one of the manga that exposed me too hot kisses in manga. My mind was way too innocent at that time…I admit I nearly passed out and it didn’t help that I was in school that time during my lunch break. (Made me think twice about reading manga in school). This hasn’t been updated in a long ,long time, but I enjoyed it in some ways, but sometimes I want to smack the classmates who can’t tell that the main character has changed, especially when she is saying it to their faces. I would also call the vampire a sexual active endangerment to the poor girl. For laughs, a good read.

Chikyuu Kanrinin by: Makoto Mori

15 years ago, the newborn Ukai Nanoha and her mother were involved in a plane crash. The mother was killed and the child alone, among all of the passengers, survived. This survival was brought about thanks to the Great Demon Maou, who replaced her unbeating heart with one of his own, allowing her to live on.

Now, however, Maou has appeared once again and attempts to force her to return his heart. In the end, Nanoha goes to live in Mezon Aasu (Earth Mansion) which exists solely for the use of magical beings, and for now at least, retains possession of the Great Demon Maou’s heart… but how will she be able to handle being manager of Earth Mansion, the place in which Maou himself makes his residence?

(Summary from Baka-Updates)

This was such a fun read. This girl is pretty intelligent in her own way and her refusal to give the heart back is very understandable. I mean if she gives the heart, she is dead. The main character guy…I think he is a vampire…with many hearts…better re-read this in my spare time, but all the chapters are translated, so definitely give this one a read.

Devils’ Line by: Ryo Hanada (Licensed by Vertical Comics)

Anzai, half vampire, and Tsukasa, a normal school girl.
Vampires seem to be living among humans. Of course the government does not know of their existence, because their appearance does not differ from humans. They also do not need to drink blood, but when they get a craving or get angry, they can become uncontrollable monsters.

(summary from Baka-Updates)

Here is a licensed work. I first read it online before it was licensed and I was hooked after the first chapter. It makes you feel sorry for the vampires that want to fit in with the humans and don’t want to drink blood. The romance is absolutely one of my favorites with the forbidden love. The main female character definitely evolves as the story continues from a weak girl with a strong will and her love for the half vampire seems to be true, even though they have only known each other for a short while. I definitely ship them. The first three volumes are already released in English and can be bought in Barnes and Nobles and Amazon.com, so give them a read and remember to use discounts if you have them (memberships, specials, or coupons).

Karin (Chibi Vampire) by: KAGESAKI Yuna (Licensed by Tokyopop & Viz)

 karin-manga

(image from Baka-Updates)

Karin is a cute little girl who also happens to be a vampire… with a twist. Once a month, she experiences intense bleeding from her nose-we’re talking gushers! In other words, she’s a vamp with blood to spare, so rather than stealing blood from humans she actually gives her blood to them. If done right, this can be an extremely positive experience that benefits the “victim” as much as the vampire. The problem is that Karin never seems to do things right!

(summary from Baka-Updates)

I read this one after I watched the anime and I was surprised on how much more content it had than the anime and the drama was a lot higher, especially when it came to Karin’s love life. The ending was quite shocking for me, but at least she got her guy.

Scholar Who Walks the Night by: Jo Joo Hee & HAN Seung Hee

Seong Yeol is a vampire scholar that has been hiding from people for many years, letting them believe that he is an old man with leprosy. The only person he lets enter his place is a smart bookseller, Yang Sun. Together they will try to fight against a conspiracy.

(summary from Baka-Updates)

Gender Bender! I like this kind of story. The girl is not a complete idiot, but it does make me worry about the vampire thing that she might be killed by the enemy vampire that attacks just about anyone…let me just hope this isn’t a tragedy for the girl, who loves books.

(summary from Visual Novel Database)

This is the otome that the anime with the same name is based off of. Not much for me to say here, since I only read the summaries (that had some curses in it).

Light Novel

Demon Noble Girl ~Story of a Careless Demon~ by: Day of Spring

She had a dream: the world was brimming with light. Family. School. Friends. Trains. Busses. Movies. Books. In that world of light, she grew into adulthood…and at the very end, in a white room, she fell into darkness. She awoke from the dream to find that she had become a lesser demon. In the demon world, she lives a carefree life until she encounters a powerful being.

After such a long time spent living as a demon, before she knew it, spreading in her heart was a yearning for that world of light. She plunged herself into a summoning magic circle that had appeared. Then…when she opened her eyes once again, she had become a human baby. She was in the Holy Kingdom. She felt fearful: while she was indeed a demon, she only had the strength of a baby. Her being a demon, if discovered, would be terrible. Was she a human or demon? Would she be able to survive from here on out?

(Summary from Moon Bunny Café)

My gosh, I’ve been wanting to recommend this for a while, but I kept forgetting. This light novel actually has vampires…and some gruesome stuff that made my heart beat out of nervousness. The main character in the beginning is quite adorable, but as the story continues, the cuteness is sometimes hard to see, but definitely a good read. I haven’t missed an update yet.

Those are all my vampire recommendations and man was that long. Well Happy Halloween to the ones who celebrate it. I actually consider this day as a day of cosplay. Oh yeah, as always, please support the creators of these works, the licensors, and the translators when you can.
