Chapter 29: Kenji’s Past

In the Earth Dome, David and the others were asking people endlessly about the location of the Strong Faction, but people either didn’t know or refused to speak with fear clearly in their eyes to the point that made one wonder what exactly did the Strong Faction did in this town.

After asking countless people, David began to curse as he punched a wall in frustration.

“David calm down,” stated Ivan and added, “We can just ask someone else, so…”

“All of them are useless and that Theo is nowhere to be found. I can’t even find Tanpopo.”

Ivan sighed and stated, “Maybe they are looking for Eve right now. They might even be headed toward the Strong Faction.”

David frowned saying, “But WE promised to protect her. It would mean nothing if we did nothing.” Ivan sighed and noticed that the others had the same look of worry on their faces. Ivan did worry for Eve as well, but he managed to stay focus on their current goal of locating the Strong Faction.

Ivan suddenly remembered a certain doctor of the faction and mentioned it to the others. They all nodded, realizing that they still had yet to ask him. They headed down the hall, but before they could take another step, Kohaku suddenly spun around and dashed off making them look back in confusion. To their surprise, Kohaku had yanked a person from another hall and as luck would have it, the person turned out to be Kenji with a satchel over his shoulder.

“Where do you think you are going?” muttered Kohaku as he dragged Kenji to the others. Kenji visibly struggled saying, “I have somewhere I need to go.”

“Is it for a patient?”

“No.”

“Then you have nowhere to go.”

Kenji felt like punching Kohaku, but had no way of doing so when Kohaku suddenly flung him to the others’ feet.

Kenji cursed and then glanced at the others with a frown on his face.

“What do you want?” asked Kenji with a grumble.

David helped Kenji to his feet saying, “Sorry for Kohaku suddenly grabbing you like that, but we were wondering if you know where the Strong Faction is?”

“I don’t.”

“He’s lying,” stated Ivan with crossed arms and added, “Anyone can tell by the tone of his voice and how much his eyes are blinking.” David frowned and looked back at Kenji, who lowered his gaze, and stated, “Ivan is pretty good at interrogation when it counts, so how about telling us the truth, unless you want us to demonstrate what we do with liars.” David crunched his knuckles to emphasize his threat.

Kenji clicked his tongue and then looked at the group before him.

“I know where the Strong Faction is.”

“Why did you deny it before?”

“Because I want to save Eve.”

Adler sighed and stated, “We want to save her too, you know.”

“I know that, since I overheard your conversation about the matter of Eve and where she is, but I want to be the one to save her.”

David frowned and stated, “How can you fight an entire Faction? You still need us.”

Kenji sighed saying, “I might not look like it, but I am a pretty strong fighter.” Kale suddenly joined the conversation saying, “Now that you mention it, Exodia seemed determined to have you in her faction and she didn’t even try to kill you when you were bringing us to the Dome.”

“That’s right because she still wants me to be a part of her faction.”

“So you are strong?”

“I was a street fighter.”

“Just like Kohaku,” stated Ivan with slight excitement. Kenji glanced at Kohaku and asked, “Is that true?” Kohaku nodded as he adjusted his hat.

Kenji then looked back at David and stated, “Only I can do this, so just wait here, while I get Eve.” David shook his head and punched the side of Kenji’s arm making Kenji slightly flinch.

“We’re strong too, so we are coming with you, whether you like it or not.”

Kenji was silent and then sighed saying, “Do what you want.” Kenji then adjusted his sachet and then began to go down the hall with the others following him.

David went to Kenji’s side and asked, “So where exactly is the Strong Faction?”

“At the only college campus in town.”

David groaned saying, “It just had to be another school ground.”

“Bad memories of school?”

“We were captured by a group of survivors living in a school. It was a nightmare, especially when zombies invaded.”

“Sounds rough.”

“It was,” stated David with a nod.

David then looked at Kenji asking, “So why did you refuse to join the Strong faction?”

“I refused because Tanpopo was in the Dome Faction.”

“So because of Tanpopo. You two are pretty close.”

Kenji nodded, but David noticed a complex look on Kenji’s face and felt the need to ask if something was wrong, but stopped when he heard Chronos say, “So Tanpopo reminded you of the girl that you killed on the table.”

Kenji’s eyes widened and then glanced at Chronos noticing that he was looking at him with his blue eyes wide open. Kenji had heard about Chronos’s power and had to fight the urge to punch Chronos.

The others looked at Kenji and asked, “Is that true?” Kenji nodded after a bit of hesitation.

“So you’re a murderer?” asked David with a frown. Kenji lowered his gaze.

“I didn’t mean to…at first.”

“At first?”

“It was an accident. I was doing kidney surgery on an eight-year-old girl, when I accidentally cut an artery. I tried to sew the cut, but then…I remembered her.”

“Her?”

“My ex-girlfriend. She was kind, but then I learned that she was cheating bitch. She broke up with me and right in front of me was her sister.”

“The child on the table was your ex’s sister?”

“That’s right,” stated Kenji and smirked saying, “I was angry and so I ACCIDENTALLY cut another artery. There was no way to save her after that. My license as a doctor was revoked. I got some jail time and then went into street fighting.”

David frowned and asked, “Did you regret killing that girl?” Kenji chuckled saying, “Considering that I stayed in the Dome Faction because of Tanpopo, I would think so.”

David clenched his fist after hearing about Kenji’s past, but David suddenly glanced at Chronos wondering why he decided to reveal Kenji’s past, but to his surprise, he saw that Chronos’s eyes were still open looking at the back of Kenji, but he also noticed that Chronos was also slightly shaking. David was about to approach him in concern, but Ivan held him back by the shoulder with seriousness in his face.

“Just let Chronos look. There must be a reason for it,” whispered Ivan. David nodded taking small glances at Chronos as they walked.

Kenji grew silent after the reveal of his past as a surgical doctor, but his story didn’t end for Chronos, who continued to look into his dark past. Chronos didn’t plan to pry, but Kenji’s insistence of finding Eve made him concerned and so he made the difficult choice of gazing into his past.

Chronos saw how Kenji’s heart was broken by his ex-girlfriend and how Kenji killed his ex’s sister during surgery. Kenji mentioned this and he was indeed punished for his crime, but one crime was never uncovered: Kenji had also killed his ex-girlfriend using a lethal dosage of a surgical medicine, but the medicine was untraceable, so the death was deemed a suicide and Kenji was not charged. Kenji sis indeed go into street fighting, but his fighting was brutal. He would beat a man until they coughed out blood and there were times when he would break the spine to paralyze his victims. Chronos couldn’t believe that this heartless person was even in the Dome that wanted peace. Chronos wanted to close his eyes to end the horror he was seeing, but felt his heart nearly stop when he saw a scene of Kenji in the bus with Tanpopo.

Tanpopo smiled in this memory as she pointed forward saying, “There’s people over there.”

            “People…you’re right.”

Chronos suddenly saw Kenji’s gaze in the distance and suddenly noticed his eyes widen. Tanpopo tilted her head at Kenji asking, “Is something wrong?”

Kenji shook his head and smiled at Tanpopo rubbing the top of her head.

“Nothing is wrong. I just feel like my world got brighter.”

            “Brighter?”

Kenji nodded and stated, “We are going to get them.”

            “All of them?”

            “…That’s right, especially the girl.”

“So one of them is a girl?”

“You might get along with her.”

            “I hope.”

Chronos saw the bus speed down the desert toward Chronos and the others when they were in the desert. Chronos saw a girl he suspected to be Eve within the group, but when Kenji allowed her on the bus, he saw the look on Kenji’s face. It looked blissful. Chronos felt a chill run down his spine and immediately shut his eyes ending his vision.

Chronos tugged on Kale’s sleeve making Kale glance at him and whispered, “We can’t let Kenji be alone with Eve ever again, especially when we go to the Strong faction.”

“Why?”

“I think Kenji loves Eve to the point of wanting to hurt her.”

Kale narrowed his eyes with clenched fists. Kale couldn’t tell the others just yet without alarming Kenji, so he just hoped that he would have the time when they reached the Strong Faction.

Kenji, on the other hand, noticed Chronos had closed his eyes and whispered something to Kale. Kenji clenched his fist with narrowed eyes.

I don’t know how much you saw Chronos, but I won’t let you or these BOYS interfere. I will save Eve and gain back the heart that was lost.

Kenji was so deep in thought that he didn’t even notice the smile that crept up on his lips.

I will save Eve.

Those were Kenji’s thoughts as he finally left the Dome with the others.
