Chapter 34: Crisis in the Underground Garage

When the floor of the gym had caved in, Eve felt like she was going to die as Gene and her rushed through the darkness. There was no telling when they would collide to the ground and the likelihood of them surviving such a fall was slim to none. Eve shut her eyes, but Gene suddenly grabbed her right hand making her face him.

“Use your power to make something that can protect us during the fall.”

Eve nodded and used her free hand to activate her power. She tried to imagine the trampoline she used before at the high school, but her fear of the fall made it difficult, so when she gripped the light in her hand, a grappling hook gun formed instead. Eve at first felt like she had failed Gene, but to her utter shock, Gene grabbed the grappling hook and pulled the trigger sending the hook flying into the darkness.

Gene wrapped his arms around her waist, while he gripped the handle of the grappling hook gun with his right hand. After a small jerk from the grappling hook, they went swinging forward and collided into a wall with a grunt.

They waited for the falling debris to pass before Gene began to ascend the rope of the grappling hook hoping to reach a ledge that was connected to a room or something with a sturdy foot hold.

Thanks to luck, the grappling hook had wrapped around a pillar leading to what looked like an underground parking garage. The moment their feet was on the sturdy ground of the parking lot, the grappling hook vanished from Gene’s hand.

“Good job, Eve,” complimented Gene as he patted Eve’s head. Eve smiled feeling relief wash over her, but that relief faded when she looked at their surroundings. It was indeed a parking garage, but the lights flickered from nearly shattered lamps making it appear that they were surrounded by fog and weak fireflies. The cement was cracked like an earthquake had shaken the grounds and some cars still remained, but the windows and headlights were shattered with traces of dried up blood on the surface. There was even a decomposing body lying head first on a steering wheel with a large hole in the back of the head and torn off flesh from the shoulder and arms. It was obvious that zombies were responsible for the destruction in this garage.

Eve and Gene could both hear the dripping of water within the garage, but they could also hear the slight moan of a zombie along with heavy and light footsteps. Gene held his hand to Eve whispering, “Summon a gun for me.” Eve nodded summoning two guns. She placed one gun in Gene’s hands as she lifted up the other in her right hand ready to fire if necessary.

“Stay close.”

Eve nodded taking light steps behind Gene. They scanned the area not removing their hands from the guns. Their eyes remained peeled as they walked with the main objective of reaching an exit to reach the surface. Gene took a few steps forward with Eve, but Eve suddenly fired only inches from Gene’s head.

“What are you…?”

“Look there!” Eve interrupted pointing at a pillar not too far from Gene’s location with the end of her gun. A zombie as thin as a stalk of corn limped out from behind the pillar moaning before falling forward with a “splat” sending rotting blood oozing from the wound on its head.

Gene gulped realizing that he would have been attacked if Eve didn’t shot, so he muttered his thanks as he looked at her only to be forced to fire his gun twice sending bullets flying pass her arms. As the bullets flew pass, Eve glanced back and saw that two zombies the size of children with black eyes were reaching toward her before the bullets collided into the foreheads sending them falling on their backs with gray flesh spewing out. The moment the children zombies collided with the ground a horde of zombies began to approach them from the darkness reaching out toward them.

Gene immediately grabbed her arm as he dashed down the open path of the garage. They ran as fast as they could scanning the area for any type of exit, but the zombies seemed to appear out of nowhere, pursuing them.

“Why is there so many down here?”

“Do you think Exodia…?”

“No…she likes control and I can tell you that this is NOT under control,” stated Gene and added, in almost a whisper, “If these things find an exit…”

Eve didn’t need to hear the rest to know that these zombies alone could cause an outbreak in this protected town of factions. Eve held her hands before her as she ran with Gene and activated her weapon summoning power.

“Stop, these guns still have time before they vanish,” urged Gene, but Eve continued using her power making the orb of light before her expand. She clasped her hands forming a red grenade.

“Is that…?”

“A grenade with enough fire power to destroy this garage.”

“ARE YOU CRAZY? That will kill us too.”

“Would you rather these things get out?”

Gene groaned and shook his head. Eve removed the key from the grenade and dove into a damaged car with Gene. They covered their ears just as the grenade rolled into the horde of zombies and blinked three times before detonating. A wall of fire covered the entirety of the garage turning the zombies to ash. The car that held Eve and Gene began to heat up making Gene and Eve sweat.

“Eve…can you hear me?”

Eve nodded with sweat running down her arms.

“Can you summon something to protect us from the explosion’s heat?”

“I’ll…try.”

Eve held her hands before her trying to summon a weapon, but the light only flickered like a candle light in the wind. Gene closed his eyes as he realized that Eve wasn’t strong enough to summon a new weapon after summoning the red grenade. He pulled Eve into a hug as Eve began to lose consciousness resting his chin on top of her head.

“Don’t feel responsible for this. You did the right thing.”

Gene felt a tear escape his eye wondering when death would claim him, but the ground under the car began to shatter sending them rushing into the darkness below. The heat had vanished remaining in that garage like an oven. The fall was so fierce that the roof of the already damaged car tore off. A force began to pull Gene and Eve apart as they rose from the car. Gene tried to hold onto Eve, but he lost his grip sending Eve flipping through the air like a rag doll.

“EVE!”

Gene reached toward her, but heard a familiar laugh before vanishing into thin air.

Eve continued to fall in her unconscious state not realizing that Gene had vanished. The ground began to show some light as she nearly made contact to the ground that was covered in fallen debris before feeling the warmth of arms holding her close.

“Eve.”

David…I knew they would come.
