Chapter 17: Tanpopo’s Attachment

The Earth Dome was once a gathering of sport legends, but now it was the headquarters of the faction led by Theo. The faction was made up of some of the town’s original members, but was also made up of survivors that were found in the desert and have decided to stay. In this sanctuary, they grew their own crops and gathered water from the storms that passed the town, but in this time of the apocalypse, they also managed to make a place of learning and a place to have fun. Eve and her companions were currently in this place.

Tanpopo dragged Eve with the others following behind and stated, “The food here is really, really good. I recommend the oatmeal.”

“Oatmeal, sounds delicious.”

“It is delicious and adding milk makes it taste even better and you know in the Dome we also play lots of games during the night after a hard day’s work. One time we even did a singing contest.”

Eve giggled as she listened to Tanpopo talk about the good things of the Dome, while the others watched on.

Ivan scratched the back of his head saying, “This place doesn’t seem so bad.”

Kale nodded in agreement adding, “We were also not tied up unlike in that school.”

David sighed saying, “That’s true, but we still need to be cautious. For all we know, this could be another trap.”

Kohaku adjusted his hat nodding and stating, “I agree with David. Nowhere is perfect.”

Adler remained silent, just looking at the smiling Eve. He felt that if this place was truly dangerous, he wanted to be the one to protect her this time. Chronos felt the same, but remained silent as well.

They soon arrived at what looked like a food court and felt their mouths instantly water at the array of food. The food seemed to be instant meals, but was organized in a way that made it seem like a feast. Tanpopo smiled at the group saying, “Only one tray per person.” They nodded and each grabbed a tray with different instant meals.

Eve grabbed the oatmeal that Tanpopo recommended and a slice of bread with a bottle of water before sitting down at a table that already had a few people sitting there. Tanpopo immediately sat next to Eve giggling.

An older male noticed Tanpopo and smiled saying, “Look who’s here.”

“Hi Mr. Cole!” cheered Tanpopo. The man, Mr. Cole, nodded at her and then glanced at Eve, who was scooping a spoonful of oatmeal on her plastic spoon.

“Is this a new member of our faction?”

“I wish, but she will only be staying temporarily before moving on sadly.”

“Moving on?” Mr. Cole muttered and then glanced at Eve asking, “Are you not aware of the dangers out there?”

“I’ll be fine as long as my friends are with me.”

“Ah, so you are not alone. That is good to hear.”

Eve nodded and then placed her oatmeal filled spoon in her mouth savoring the taste. Eve licked her lips and began to eat the oatmeal rapidly.

“You must have been hungry,” commented Mr. Cole with a chuckle.

Eve was joined by the others, who began to eat their meals just as fast. Tanpopo giggled at the sight and stated, “You guys sure eat fast.”

Eve finished her meal and sighed in relief.

“That was very good.”

“Told you,” cheered Tanpopo. Eve giggled and patted Tanpopo’s head making Tanpopo give out a giggle in delight.

Tanpopo began to tug on Eve’s sleeve saying, “Now let’s see my room and you can rest there until the announcement as well.” Eve nodded, but paused and looked at the others asking, “Are you coming?”

David lowered his spoon looking at Tanpopo and then back at Eve.

“We’ll finish our meal first, so you go with that girl for now.”

Eve nodded and then left with a smiling Tanpopo.

Adler immediately grabbed David’s sleeve and asked, “Are you seriously letting Eve go off on her own?”

David glanced at Adler and whispered, “It’ll be fine. I sense no hostility from that girl and I think Eve wants to be alone with that girl, but we will go to her immediately after we eat.” Adler nodded and began to eat a lot faster making the people around them stare in disbelief.

Eve was brought into a room with pink drapes on the walls and a single bed. Tanpopo dragged Eve to the bed and sat her down saying, “This is my room. Others aren’t allowed in here, so we can play all we want in here.” Eve nodded, but cringed when she felt like something was gripping her stomach.

“I would love to play, but I think I should rest. My stomach hurts a bit.”

“Did you eat too much?”

“Maybe,” stated Eve with a giggle. Tanpopo crossed her arms in thought and stated, “Go ahead and lie down. I don’t want you to look weak in front of those stupid leaders.”  Eve laid her head down on the pillow and then looked at Tanpopo.

“I can’t play, but can you talk with me.”

Tanpopo nodded with excited eyes.

“What do you want to talk about?”

“About the faction leaders, when did they arrive?”

“About the same time as me. We came from the same facility after all.”

“Were you close with them?”

“Oh heavens no! I was only close with Theo at the facility. The others were really mean to me. I was happy when we separated in this town.”

“I see…is Theo nice?”

Tanpopo nodded and added, “He took care of me when we were lost in the desert and even in the facility he shared his snacks with me. He also told great stories.”

“Stories?”

“Yeah, like the Little Wooden Boy. That was a neat story.”

“Can you tell it to me?”

Tanpopo nodded and began to tell the story in excitement as Eve listened with a smile on her face.

It had been a long time since Eve felt this relaxed, but the pain in her stomach made it hard for her to keep relaxed.
