In a Nobunaga mood, so recommendations based on him

Manga Hunter here! I have been suffering from a cold, ever since I watched Frozen Fever (The short is not to blame for sickness) and for some reason began to think back to the Nobunaga manga I read and the anime I watched with his reincarnation. So this post is manga and anime recommendations based on Oda Nobunaga.

Manga

Nobunaga no Chef by: NISHIMURA Mitsuru & KAJIKAWA Takurou

Ken is a modern-day chef who wakes up one morning in war-torn 16th century Japan. Faced with an impossible situation, he does what he does best – he cooks. Soon, word of his wonderful food reaches the capital, and the ears of warlord Oda Nobunaga, who immediately orders Ken to cook for him. What will happen to Ken as he finds himself stumbling around in an era he doesn’t belong?

(summary from Baka-Updates)

Another time travel story, but the main character has amnesia, so it is a little more interesting, especially when most of the stuff he remembers is related to cooking. Nobunaga uses this time traveling chef to help win battles and to fill his stomach. This actually taught me a little about cooking, so I know when I live on my own, I won’t starve to death.

Geten no Hana by: Ruby Party & Kumada Yuka

Hotaru Kunoichi of the Iga Village has accepted a request to infiltrate Oda Nobunaga’s castle, Aduchi Castle. Under the guise that she is the younger sister of Mitsuhide, Nobunaga’s confidante, she investigates the Oda army for dissenters. Hotaru deepens her relations with great military commanders, from Nobunaga to Hashiba Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu. However, it will all be over if they find out who she truly is . . .

(summary from Paperdolls Project)

This manga is based from an Otome game of the same name. The main character girl isn’t a damsel in distress, but a shinobi who is working to protect Nobunaga. In the otome game, she could choose any guy she wants, but in the manga, the canon pairing is Nobunaga and I have to admit that he is good looking (no beard). The other guy characters are also candy for the eye, especially if you are into bishounen and ikemen.

Nobunaga Kyousoukyoku by: Ishii Ayumi

History classes have never interested Saburo. He never saw the point of learning something that happened in the past, let alone a few hundred years ago. But when he falls off a wall, he travels through a wormhole and ends up in 16th century ancient Japan. He meets a very young Oda Nobunaga, one of the most influential figures in Japanese history, who turns out to be identical in appearance as Saburo. The real Nobunaga, sick of the castle life and wanting to travel, orders Saburo to take his place. Without knowing how to get back to his time, Saburo tries to make sure history isn’t rewritten for the infamous Oda Nobunaga.

(summary from MangaHelpers)

This is another time traveling story and the main character is actually the replacement for the sickly Nobunaga, who has run away from his duty. The main character looked exactly like Nobunaga and assumed his identity. In this case, Nobunaga was a fool because his replacement was a carefree teenager who went with the flow or did whatever he wanted to do. The manga tries to stick with the real history of Nobunaga, but I focus more on the comedy aspect of the story.

Sengoku Blood – Bara no Keiyaku by: HIROI Ouji & KOSUMI Fujiko

When twins are born to the Oda household, Karin is tossed aside as an unwanted child. The one person who gave her strength through her childhood was her brother, Oda Nobunaga. Now both adults, Nobunaga sets about his plan for world domination in order to unify the world and create a place of happiness for both his subjects and his sister. However, tragedy strikes as Nobunaga is attacked in his palace and murdered. Beside his death bed, Karin vows to take on her brother’s dream and act as his substitute, even if it requires making a deal with a demon to do so…

(summary from Baka-Updates)

This is a gender bender manga with the twin sister of Nobunaga taking his place after he was killed. There is also a supernatural aspect since the main character girl makes a pact with a demon to gain the strength to help her brother’s dream come true. Pretty much, Nobunaga is dead and his sister takes the spotlight. This can also be seen as a reverse harem since I noticed that there were plenty of guys interested in her (as a guy and as a girl).

Anime

Nobunagun

Shio Ogura is a Japanese high school student, who is visiting Taiwan on a school trip when she is suddenly attacked by monsters. Agents known as “E-Gene Holders” from the government agency DOGOO also arrive, who wield weapons infused with the spirits of historical figures. Shio is revealed to also be an E-Gene Holder when the soul of Oda Nobunaga awakens after she tries to rescue a friend.

(summary from MyAnimeList)

This is a science-fiction action anime series and the main character is the reincarnation of Nobunaga. She is a lover of guns and that might have something to do with the spirit in her and there are others with spirits in them as well that take the form of weapons or powers. I really enjoyed this one and there was romance in the end, so I got my Kyaa! moments, while reading this. This is a licensed work.

Those are my Nobunaga inspired recommendations. I hope you guys enjoy them and as always, please support the creators of these works and the translators when you can.
